What a “local food point” means

A local food point is not a classic restaurant: it is a household that serves food cooked at home, from local produce, usually in the same courtyard where the family lives. At Zestrea Brebului the kitchen works in the same household as the guesthouse, so the meal does not come from a standard menu but from what was cooked that day.

That is why the menu changes from one day to the next: what matters is what is fresh in the village, what is picked from the garden and what the producer brings that morning.

  • Food cooked at home, not reheated
  • Produce from our own garden and from producers in Breb
  • A menu that changes with the day and the season

What we cook, day by day

The sour soups are made in the morning, with borș and herbs: radăuțeană, bean soup, beef soup or vegetable soup, depending on the day. Then comes the main course, usually something from Maramureș cooking: sarmale in pickled cabbage leaves cooked in a clay pot, mushroom stew, goulash with locally raised beef, or country potatoes with roast meat.

Desserts are made here too: pies with cheese and dill, apple pies, and sometimes doughnuts with icing sugar that guests remember long after they leave.

  • Traditional breakfast: homemade cheeses, smoked bacon, eggs from the yard, jams, fresh bread, milk and yoghurt
  • The daily menu usually has two options for each course
  • Plum brandy and blueberry liqueur on the house

Breakfast and dinner for guests

Guests staying at the guesthouse receive breakfast and dinner in the half-board package. Breakfast is what the hosts prepare in the morning: homemade cheeses, smoked bacon, eggs from the hens in the yard, forest-fruit jams, fresh bread, milk and natural yoghurt.

Dinner closes the day with a soup, a main course and a dessert, and the evening can continue in the courtyard pavilion with a glass of blueberry liqueur.

For visitors, not only for guests

The food point also welcomes people who are not staying at the guesthouse: some stop on their way through, others come especially for a meal in the village. At midday the daily menu is served, and for groups it is best to call ahead so the hosts know how many portions to cook.

If you just want to taste something traditional in Breb, call 0764 297 067 and ask what has been cooked that day — the answer is always about what is fresh, not about a fixed list.

Where the ingredients come from

Some of the vegetables and herbs come from our own garden, while the cheeses, bacon and meat come from producers in Breb and the neighbouring villages. The bread, jams and zacusca are made at home, and the plum brandy and blueberry liqueur are local too.

For guests, this means the meal belongs to the village where they sleep: not a hotel menu, but the food they would find at a family table in Maramureș.
