Breb, Maramureș: a guide to the village
A village at the foot of the Gutâi Mountains, with dirt lanes, carved gates and a wooden church from the 16th century. Some 25 km from Sighetu Marmației and 52 km from Baia Mare, Breb is where the finest walks in the area begin.

Where Breb is and how to get there
Breb is a village in the commune of Ocna Șugatag, Maramureș county, at 501 metres above sea level on the northern side of the Gutâi Mountains, in the Mara–Cosău area. It lies about 7 km from Ocna Șugatag, 25 km from Sighetu Marmației and 52 km from Baia Mare, with Budești just a few kilometres away.
By car, the simplest route follows DN18 from Baia Mare or Sighetu Marmației, turning towards Breb at Ocna Șugatag. You can also take the train to Sighetu Marmației, from where it is another 25 km by car.
What to see in the village
The first place we recommend is the wooden church from the 16th century, with its tall steeple, visible from afar. Around it, the lanes keep the old wooden houses with high roofs and carved gates — some of them over a hundred years old and still lived in.
People still work here: woven baskets, woollen socks, embroidered blouses and wooden objects, sold directly by the craftsmen. It is worth a slow walk, because the distances are short and the beautiful things are in courtyards, not in shop windows.

The Rooster's Crest and walks from Breb
The Rooster's Crest is the rocky ridge rising above the village, in the Gutâi Mountains. The trail starts in Breb and climbs through forest to the ridge; the round trip takes around four to six hours, depending on your pace, so it is worth starting in the morning with water and good shoes.
For a shorter walk you can head to Tăul Morărenilor. Cyclists have the Traseul Șinelor, about 21 km, which also starts at the old church in the village.
Breb with children
The village is easy to visit with children: the roads are quiet, and carriage and horse rides are part of life here. On rainy days, the guesthouse indoor pool solves the energy problem — the children swim while the parents sit with a coffee.
The courtyard also has a playground, and the pavilion is a good place for dinner outdoors.
Where to stay and where to eat in Breb
Zestrea Brebului is a guesthouse with ten rooms with private bathrooms, an indoor pool and a sauna, right at the entrance to the village. Guests receive breakfast and dinner in the half-board package, and the local food point serves meals to visitors who are not staying overnight.
If you come for just one day, stop for a meal: the menu changes every day, according to what is cooked at home.
When Breb is at its best
In spring the village blossoms, in summer you climb the Rooster's Crest and sit in the pavilion in the evening, in autumn the plums ripen and the brandy is made, and in winter Breb turns quiet, with snow on the lanes and clean air.
The guesthouse is open all year, and the indoor pool and sauna make the difference in the cold months.
