What to see in Maramureș, starting from Breb

From the village houses that are over a hundred years old to the Mocănița steam train on the Vaser Valley: the places we recommend to our guests.

Breb, a village that has kept its shape

Breb is one of those villages where Maramureș looks the way it did a hundred years ago: wooden houses with tall roofs, carved gates, dirt lanes and people who still work the land with a hoe.

The village wooden church, with its tall steeple, is the first place we recommend — you can see it from afar, and it is visited in silence.

The wooden churches of Maramureș

Maramureș has some of the oldest wooden churches in Europe, and several of them are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. They are built from oak beams, with tall towers and shingle roofs.

The road between them passes through villages where the crafts are still practised: pottery and weaving.

The Merry Cemetery at Săpânța

The Merry Cemetery is the best-known place in Maramureș: blue wooden crosses, each with a short story about the life of the person buried there, written with humour.

It lies at Săpânța, close to the Tisa river, and is visited quietly — it is a cemetery, not an amusement park.

The Mocănița on the Vaser Valley

The Mocănița leaves from Vișeu de Sus and climbs the Vaser Valley through forests on a narrow-gauge railway built to carry timber.

It is a full-day trip, with scenery that changes at every bend — one of the finest experiences in the area.

Guided trips and local crafts

We organise guided trips for guests who want to understand what they are seeing: picturesque villages, wooden churches, pottery and weaving workshops.

Back at the guesthouse, dinner closes the day with food cooked from garden ingredients and produce from the village.
